3D Downtown, Project with Google and Main Street McMinnville Goes Live in March

The much-anticipated project called 3D Downtown, a collaborative effort between Main Street McMinnville and Google, will be unveiled in March.  The project has taken five months to complete with more than forty volunteers and hundreds of hours.

The outcome is already generating lots of anticipation from both the private and public sectors.  Chris Wilson, Executive Director of Main Street McMinnvile said "Alliance for the Cumberlands, a regional planning organization comprised of professionals from six states were given a preview at their conference on February 25.  When I heard the 'wows, oohs and ahs', I knew we had something good."  The project will be previewed to the TN State Legislature on March 4th by James McBride, a student at McMinnville’s Tennessee Technology Center's, who played a big role in the project.  The project will also be presented to a national audience by Google on April 1 in Philadelphia.

3D Downtown will provide a 3D view of more than 120 buildings that make up downtown McMinnville, posted on Google Earth.  The buildings will be in full-color just as they look now.  One can travel through downtown past buildings, down alleys or on top of buildings.  One can also view the actual terrain of the mountains around us.  Google says the project should be available for viewing sometime in March.

Stay tuned for more announcements.
